Jennie Rosenbaum

The human body has held constant fascination for Jennie Rosenbaum, partially due to her studies in art history and anatomy, and partially due to her own relationship with her body, both in image and after a car accident that left her with a chronic pain disability.

Jennie Rosenbaum excelled in art and art history at school and studied archaeology, painting, drawing and photography at the University of Monash, Curtin and RMIT. She has also worked closely with artist Donald Cameron in his studio and had the opportunity to be part of a specialized life class at the National Gallery of Victoria.

An American working from her home in Melbourne, Australia, Jennie Rosenbaum has exhibited her works in the art capitals of the world. Her art has been seen at Miami Art Basel, at numerous Melbourne galleries, in New York and Boston. Furthermore Ms. Rosenbaum has donated works to support bushfire victims and VisualAIDs.

While her artwork has won her numerous awards, Ms. Rosenbaum works to maintain the image of the nude in art and writes a blog about censorship in art. She also leads nude advocacy groups and a group online for people with disabilities.

“My artwork explores the relationship women have with their bodies. We live in an age of extremes and dichotomies, where women are celebrated for objectifying themselves and others, but nude art is reviled. Where the word curvy is synonymous with the word fat and anorexia and obesity have become the norm. My artwork is unashamedly nude, but not erotic or titillating. I reveal glimpses into my own history and battles with personal issues, but try to make my work something that most people can associate with. My artwork captures emotion and encourages an empathic reaction in the viewers. It considers the different issues women face both internally and through external forces. These works are open for interpretation. Frequently a meaning that I feel in an artwork summons a different gamut of emotions, memories and feelings in another viewer. My titles are ambiguous for this reason. The nude body is a beautiful, sensual, expressive entity. We communicate through so much more than our voices and resonate feelings through body language.”
